A little about Fig Tree Farms
Ben and I bought Fig Tree Farms over thirty years ago. We were taken by the beautiful Santa Clara River Valley, about 60 miles up the coast from Los Angeles, the first time we visited and knew we had found our home. The original orchard was old Lisbon lemon trees which we nursed along for twenty years but after Ben passed I knew that the lemons had reached the end of their productive life and needed to be replanted. It was either that or sell the ranch. I decided to replant with Meyer lemons, which were just beginning to be grown commercially. Within a few years of planting the Meyers I also planted my first Finger Limes. It turned out that one decision was good and the other wasn't. The market for Meyers cratered in 2016 due to oversupply and got even worse in 2017. Seeing a bleak future for Meyers, I tore out all 3500 Meyer trees and once again planted Lisbon lemons, the traditional fruit that is always in demand. I also planted Hass avocados around the perimeter of the ranch. And along the way I planted 440 Finger Lime trees.
I first sold Finger Limes at the Ventura Farmers Market and introduced many people to the new fruit. This 2020-2021 season marks my seventh season selling Finger Limes. I've sent them all over the US and to Great Britain and Canada. I enjoy the many new friends I've made who love Finger Limes.
